Emotional Guidance Counsellor

The Emotional Guidance Counsellor is responsible for providing high-quality, student-centred counselling services and wellbeing support across the school community. You will collaborate closely with school leaders, teachers, parents, and external specialists to promote students' emotional wellbeing, resilience, and personal development.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide confidential short-term individual counselling and facilitate group intervention programmes for students.
- Support students experiencing challenges related to anxiety, emotional wellbeing, social relationships, identity development, academic stress, grief, and other personal concerns.
- Conduct risk assessments, develop safety plans, and support students returning to school following periods of absence or intervention.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case records in accordance with professional and safeguarding standards.
- Liaise with and refer students to external mental health professionals and specialist services when appropriate.
- Actively contribute as a member of the school's safeguarding team, demonstrating a strong understanding of child protection policies and procedures.
- Support pastoral planning, crisis management, and multidisciplinary approaches to student wellbeing.
- Promote a culture of inclusion, psychological safety, and emotional wellbeing throughout the school community.
- Collaborate with colleagues to identify and support students requiring additional pastoral or wellbeing interventions.
- Design and deliver workshops, programmes, and initiatives focused on resilience, emotional literacy, stress management, digital wellbeing, healthy relationships, and life transitions.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the school's PSHE and wellbeing curriculum.
- Encourage student leadership, peer support initiatives, and student voice programmes that promote wellbeing and positive mental health.
- Provide guidance and support to parents on adolescent development, emotional wellbeing, and mental health concerns.
- Facilitate parent education workshops and information sessions.
- Deliver professional development and training for staff on mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding, and student support strategies.
- Foster effective and culturally responsive communication with families from diverse backgrounds.
- Contribute to the school's wellbeing strategy, policy development, and implementation of evidence-based practices.
- Monitor and analyse wellbeing trends, identifying emerging student needs and recommending appropriate interventions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen student wellbeing and pastoral care provision across the school.
Job Requirements
- Master's degree in Counselling, Psychology, Psychotherapy, or a related discipline.
- Current professional registration, accreditation, or eligibility for registration with a recognised counselling, psychology, or psychotherapy professional body.
- Minimum of five years' experience working with adolescents in a school, educational, or youth mental health setting.
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding and child protection practices.
- Demonstrated intercultural competence and the ability to work effectively within diverse international communities.
- Experience supporting neurodiverse learners and students with varying emotional and wellbeing needs.
- Proven experience in crisis intervention, risk assessment, and suicide prevention or management.
- Previous experience working in an international school environment and supporting internationally mobile families will be a plus.
- Training or certification in evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, or trauma-informed practices.
- Familiarity with UK-style pastoral care systems, safeguarding frameworks, and wellbeing provision within educational settings.
